Primary Schools


Throughout the year we have many performances suitable for children of primary school age.

In March, Fevered Sleep bring their latest production The Forest to mac birmingham. The creators of Brilliant and And the Rain Falls Down present a treat to excite your imagination and tickle your senses - recommended for children aged 5-7. It's a thrilling, surprising and enchanting performance that explores the landscape of the forest through music, dance, light and sound.

Secondary Schools, Further Education and Higher Education


mac birmingham
 has a strong programme of visual arts, performance and events which are ideal for young people and students. 

Highlights in theatre include poet and writer Nick Makoha taking to the stage for the first time in his autobiographical one man show My Father and Other Superheroes*, For Once by Pentabus, and a selection of critically-acclaimed shows from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - Thirsty by The Paper Birds*, Francesca Millican-Slater's Me, Myself and Miss Gibbs and The Seagull Effect by Idle Motion*.

The REP will also be returning to mac birmingham with three shows - Gravity, Wasted and Mustafa

For those studying dance, Shobana Jeyasingh: Classic Cut* is a unique and intriguing new show from choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh, while Fleur Darkin presents two shows in one with Blake Diptych - Innocence and Experience.

For All


This spring, our visual arts programme provides opportunities for all ages to engage with art.

Our main exhibition is Made in the Middle. This exhibition will feature stunning contemporary pieces from craft makers across the Midlands.

From late January, our Arena Gallery will be transformed into 10 different plots for ALLOTMENT will see 10 plots handed over to different curators to "grow" their own exhibitions in our Arena Gallery.

Verbatim Theatre with The Paper Birds
Join the cast of Thirsty to explore how The Paper Birds devise their productions, using a fusion of verbatim text and physicality.

Idle Motion: Seagull Effect
A workshop to encourage students to be more confident theatre-makers with an insight into creative and playful routes into the devising process. Education pack available for schools attending any performance of The Seagull Effect.

Nick Makoha: The Hero in You
Connecting to the themes explored in My Father and Other Superheroes, this collection of workshops aims to define and demystify heroic icons.

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company
The company behind Classic Cut have a fantastic range of workshops and resources which can be tailored to meet the needs of students all levels.
